Western Plains District is a Church of the Brethren district serving congregations across Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and New Mexico. We exist to support those congregations in their shared life and mission, and to connect them to the wider Church of the Brethren.
Christ-like Love
We’re part of the larger body of Christ, called to love without condition or reservation. That means welcoming people wherever they are in their journey and carrying Christ’s love into our neighborhoods without exception.
Root Community in Scripture and Prayer
As a priesthood of all believers, scripture and prayer ground everything we do. We hold each other, our congregations, and our world in prayer, and look to scripture to guide how we live and lead.
Building Bridges Among Communities
As a peace church, we work toward reconciliation, even amid disagreement. We’re committed to hospitality across differences and to ministry that reaches the specific needs of our varied communities, including those on the margins.
Christ’s Peace for All Creation
Our faith extends to how we care for the earth and all its creatures. We’re committed to a nonviolent way of living and to nurturing the wellbeing of creation, not just the people in it.
Service
We follow Jesus’ example by serving others in his name, loving God and neighbor the way he asked us to. Service isn’t an add-on to our faith, it’s how we live it out.
Living Simply
We try to keep Christ at the center, not cultural pressure or convenience. That means thinking carefully about how we spend our time and resources, trusting that God provides for what we need.
Our Purpose
We support our congregations in life together, reflecting and practicing God’s love and good news in Christ.
Our Mission
Centered in Christ, we’re a Church of the Brethren district inspired to energize, empower, and embolden congregations to follow Jesus in our neighborhoods.
Connection to the Wider Church
The Church of the Brethren began nearly three centuries ago out of a simple conviction: to continue the work of Jesus, peacefully, simply, and together. As a district, we carry that same spirit into our corner of the denomination, connecting our congregations to a much larger family of faith.
Western Plains District is guided by a Leadership Team and several Ministry Teams who carry out the district’s work.
